It’s hard to even describe today’s experiences….everything was so amazing, but in different ways.
The place we stayed at last night, the Wah-Weap campgrounds, was simply stunning. It is literally right next to Lake Powell, and is surrounded by interesting rock formations. Below is a picture of our trailer at the camp site, and the view we had from the door of the trailer.
Dick was up at his usual early hour. He took Windy down to the lake for her walk, and he relaxed on the beach until the sun came up.

When he got back, it was such a glorious morning that he enjoyed his coffee outside. Windy really enjoyed basking in the sunshine.
Ken and Shelby preferred to enjoy the comfort of the trailer….lol.
It was hard to leave such a nice place, but we had a tour scheduled at 1:00 pm at The Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab, so we rolled out and started on our way.
The drive between Lake Powell and Kanab is filled with beauty everywhere you look.
Best Friends Does Not Disappoint
We arrived in Kanab at 12:30pm for our tour of Best Friends Animal Sanctuary.
I visited the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary years ago, and have been a big admirer of the work they do on behalf of animals ever since. Their goal is to save every animal, and they do extensive outreach work towards that goal. Their emphasis is on adoption and spay and neuter clinics at local levels. Last year their programs resulted in the adoption of 80,000 animals!
The sanctuary is truly an amazing place! It sits on 3700 acres in Angel Canyon and houses dogs, cats, horses, pigs, birds, goats and other critters.
Many of the animals at the sanctuary are special needs. For some, it is their last hope. The sanctuary has 400 employees, which includes 6 full time veterinarians.
We boarded a transport van with several other folks on the tour. We were shown several of the areas where animals are received, evaluated & treated. The sanctuary has 12,000 volunteers who help socialize the animals, do rehab, and take care of the feeding & cleaning.
We spent some time in one of the building that houses cats. Some of them have been there for years, due to medical and/or behavior problems. The animals that are not adopted will live at the sanctuary for the rest of their life.
We also found out that the area where the sanctuary sits has also been used to make many western movies, including the Outlaw Josie Wales.
The below picture is an area used in alot of movies where the bad guys are “headed off at the pass”.
We stayed at the Sanctuary for three hours and thoroughly enjoyed our tour. It’s wonderful to know there are so many people willing to help make the lives of animals better.
Once back at the trailer, we had a quick lunch and planned the next leg of our trip for today.
We knew we were headed towards Las Vegas, but since we were so close to the Zion National Forest, we just had to see it!
I have never seen such majestic and colorful rock formations as those in Zion. They are almost too pretty to be believed.
The road is a bit challenging for an RV to navigate, but Ken did a great job. A portion of the drive takes you through the middle of a massive rock mountain….by way of a narrow 1 1/2 mile tunnel. It was too cool!
Due to the narrow, winding roads at Zion, it took awhile to drive through the park and it was so totally worth it.
After leaving the park, we continued towards Las Vegas, and finally got to our campsite around 8:30….but since we gained an hour, it was really only 7:30.
We just finished dinner at the campground restaurant and had the pleasure of watching the Red Sox beat the Dodgers……it really has been an enjoyable day in every way!
