There was quite a sharp contrast between what we woke up to yesterday and what we woke up to today.
Yesterday, we had lots of open space and you could literally hear the sound of a bird’s wings as it flew by.
This morning, our neighbor was only a few feet away, and instead of hearing birds as they flew by, we had a dinosaur to greet us. Las Vegas sure is an interesting place.
We weren’t in a hurry to get up and going….in fact we really didn’t have any firm plans on what route we would take to get home.
I remembered that yesterday as we came into the Vegas area, Ken had mentioned wanting to see the car shop where the TV show “Counting Cars” is filmed.
A quick internet search indicated that the business where the show is filmed is called Count Kustoms and was only a 15 minute drive away from our campground.
Once we broke camp and got the dogs loaded up, it was around 10:30 a.m. Dick somehow managed to get us to the right neighborhood where the Count Kustoms shop was located – which was no easy feat with all of the construction going on in the area.
We totally lucked out with parking. Some reviewers indicated that parking can be tricky, but we found a big shady spot to park the RV right in front of the shop!
Surprisingly, admission to tour the shop of custom cars was free…..I liked that price. There aren’t a ton of cars to see, but everything was displayed well. Ken recognized several of the finished cars as projects he had seen built on the TV series.
It didn’t take long to complete the tour, and we were heading out of Las Vegas and on our way to Pahrump by 1:00pm.
We still hadn’t made up our mind on the way we wanted to go home. We stopped in Pahrump for fuel and food, and finally decided to head to Tonopah tonight, and then to Sparks tomorrow.
We got into Tonopah around 5:00 pm. We called from Pahrump once we figured out where we were going and reserved a spot at an RV campground. Good thing we did, as it was filled up when we got there.
Before taking off for dinner, I had to pay off a bet I made with Dick a few days ago when we were in Albuquerque having lunch with his friend.
We had been talking about all the states we’ve been to on this trip, and there was one state that I knew for sure we had NOT been to, and Dick was sure we HAD been to it…..namely West Virginia.
Our bet was for a billion dollars (I was very confident!), but then I figured I’d better reduce the bet to $5.00 “just in case”.
As we were driving to Tonopah this afternoon, I was looking through our blog because my sister thought a day was missing. As I was reading the post from Day 7, I noticed that I had written “we passed through a small portion of West Virginia….”
Well darn……I cost myself $5.00. I really had no recollection of writing about,, or being in, West Virginia. Sure glad I reduced the amount of our bet.
After the trauma of having to pay up, we headed into downtown Tonopah for dinner. The sky was a beautiful pastel color as we took off.
We went to the historic Mizpah Hotel for dinner. The Mizpah opened in 1907 and is sometimes referred to as “The Grand Lady”.
Dinner at The Porter Cafe inside The Mizpah was really good. The back of the menu had some information on the history of the hotel. The Mizpah (with its 5 floors) was actually the tallest hotel in Nevada until 1929 and its supposedly haunted by a female who was murdered in the hotel in 1920.
We got back to the trailer by 9:00pm. The pups were glad to see us. They have no idea that their long trip is almost at an end.
Tomorrow we’ll be in Sparks for the final night of our epic road trip.
I’m a little bit broker but closer to home.
Goodnight.
