We left Sidney, Nebraska around 9:00 a.m.  When we got in last night, it was dark and drizzly, so we really didn’t know what the area looked like.

This morning I can see that Nebraska is flat and green…and did I mention flat?  It’s also very special to me because my mom was born in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Lady Luck Was On Our Side

We stopped to stretch our legs & give the dogs a break at the Sutherland rest stop.

We had been having a minor issue with our bicycles strapped to the back of the RV where the spare tire is mounted. They kept shifting during the ride, and we had to keep tightening the bolts. Dick was examining the issue, and he noticed a crack in the bracket itself. Needless to say, we took the bikes off the rack and put them in the trailer.  Luckily, the problem was spotted before one or both bikes fell off on the highway and hurt someone.

The Great Platte River Area

While the guys were taking care of the bicycle problem, I was giving the dogs a rest break.  The rest area is in the vicinity of the Platte River Road, which was a major overland trail corridor which followed the course of the Platte River.

This corridor provided the route for several  emigrant trails and played a major role in the westward expansion of the United States.

The Archway in Kearney, Nebraska

We passed through Kearney on Highway 80 and after a short distance we could see an incredible structure stretching across the highway.  Dick told us that we were looking at the Kearney Archway.  He had been to this area before and had the opportunity to go to the Archway, which is a museum of the Platte River valley’s role in the westward expansion.

As we were driving between Council Bluffs and Des Moines, Iowa, we saw some big rigs hauling extraordinarily long white objects. Turns out they were windmill props….each one had to be 100 foot long.  I’ve only seen windmills in the distance, so it was quite a surprise to see how long they are!

  • Windmill prop being hauled by big rig. Look how small the truck looks in comparison

We stopped for the night at the KOA Campground in Adel, Iowa after traveling 512 miles.

Another good day on the road.
