Truckers Have Nothing On Us !

We enjoyed our night’s stay at Earp & James Hitching Post in Snowville, Utah.  What the campground lacks in amenities it makes up for with its beautiful scenery and grounds. There are great open spaces for dogs to run off leash.  Dick and Windy spotted a big sandhill crane when they were out walking in the morning.  Dick said Windy stared at it for the longest time!

The weather has been nice….in the low 80’s….but the wind was sure howling last night.  Our travel today will take us over the rocky mountains….where there will be even more wind I’m told.

The Wassatch Mountain Range.

I must say that the Wassatch range is beautiful !  The Wassatch Mountains are in the western range of the Rocky Mountains.  There are many great ski areas in the area, but I’m awfully glad there is no snow falling right now. The wind is sure blowing…..we’re getting gusts up to 45 mph….sometimes we are running into it, sometimes it comes at us from the side, and at times it is pushing us.

Utah is so scenic.  Staying on highway 84, we are passing through several familiar sounding cities such as Tremonton, Brigham City and Ogden.   Dick’s son lived in both Tremonton and Brigham City at one time.   I can see why he was drawn to the area, not to mention the fact that his wife is from Utah.  Today, they make their home in Layton, Utah.

We can only see a small part of one of the inlets of the Great Salt Lake as we travel east through Utah on highway 84.  Judging from the size of the inlet, I can only imagine how gigantic the lake must look in person!

We’re making a stop to stretch our legs at a rest stop and let the dogs walk around.  There is a paved walk-way leading up to an overview area and an interesting display board explaining the history of the Utah war.

What Strange Looking Fences

I keep seeing wooden fences along both sides of the highway, but they don’t look like they could contain animals and I wonder what their purpose is.  I learned that these are snow fences, which are barriers that force windblown snow to accumulate.  Basically, they are used to minimize the amount of snowdrift on the road….who knew?  Probably everyone except me….lol.

We weren’t going to do it, but what the heck…when you’re in Wyoming you really do need to stop and visit “Little America Travel Center”. This is a truck stop, but it has great restroom and .75 cent soft cones, so what’s not to like?

It also has a very magnificent buffalo statue.   Any time I see a buffalo it reminds me of a dear friend (the father of the young man whose wedding we attended)  who loves anything buffalo.

Well….it was a long travel day….but a good one.  We came 602 miles today, which put us ahead of schedule, and for anyone who knows me I’m sure that will be a bit surprising…lol.

We are staying at the Cabela’s campground tonight in Sidney, Nebraska.  I think I like Nebraska already…..when I tried to pay for a reservation by phone, the young lady said “no need….if the office is closed just stop by and pay in the morning”.  I love that old fashioned (and trusting) way of doing business.

We stayed “home” again for dinner….salad & chili.  Life doesn’t get much better than this.
