Launch Day!

We can’t believe that September 27th, 2018 is finally here.  After months and months of planning our road trip, we are finishing up the remaining packing and taking off at noon today.

I mis-spoke….when I said “we” are finishing up the final packing, I really meant I started and finished my packing on the day we left.

The guys have been packed and ready to go for at least two weeks….but I put off packing my clothes and food until the day of departure.  I figured since I had “all morning” to pack, I had plenty of time….besides…I can usually get more done in 30 minutes than I can in 30 days.

We had a marvelous celebration the night before at our dear friend’s house.  They made us a wonderful dinner, and also had birthday goodies and cake for the hubby’s birthday….I can’t believe he turned 73 on September 25th.  He was only 30 when we got married.

Ken turned 73.

Somehow, I managed to get all that last minute packing done, and tidied up the house so the house sitters (our grandson and his wife) wouldn’t think we were too disgusting.

Much  to everyone’s surprise, we rolled out of the driveway almost on time…it was 12:10 pm.  The dogs were particularly excited that the big day had finally come.

Shelby and Windy

So there we were, full of anticipation as we started our journey!   Approximately 45 minutes later, we came across a major construction zone, and got stopped there for 30 minutes ☹

There were two more construction stops, but they were both only 10 minutes long.  We made it to Grass Valley and took a pit stop and doggie break.

The ride up was uneventful.   I always enjoy going through the beautiful Sierra Nevada’s, and when we went through Fernley, I enjoyed seeing the painted rocks.  Dick has spent time in the Fernley area working to preserve the Fernley Swales, which have been on the endangered historic places list until recently.

We arrived in Winnemucca, Nevada at approximately 7:00 pm and pulled into the Model T RV Park.  We had decided to eat most of our meals in the trailer, but this was a big night so we went to the Model T casino/diner.  It was so smoky in there and the food was so-so…but we still enjoyed ourselves.

The dogs were so tired, once they got up on the couch inside the trailer they fell fast asleep and I don’t think they moved all night.

All in all…..our first day on the road was FABULOUS !
