Dog Food Recipe

Through-out this blog I have mentioned the dog food I make in my instant pot for Windy and Shelby.   They really are addicted to this stuff….so much so that we use the nickname “puppy crack” whenever we refer to it.

Several people have asked for the recipe, so I have included it here:

Laura’s Puppy Crack Recipe for the Instant Pot

WARNING:  Your dog will get addicted!

Ingredients:

2 tablespoons of coconut oil

1 lb lean ground beef

1 container of chicken livers (approximately 1 lb)

2 16 oz packages of frozen California Blend vegetables

1 cup of water  (using ½ cup at a time, see below)

1 cup of instant rice (either white or brown)

DIRECTIONS:

Turn on instant pot and put on saute mode.

Add coconut oil.

Once oil is melted, add the ground beef and chicken livers.

Saute meat until just about done (approximately 7 minutes, stirring frequently).

Turn Off Instant Pot.

Empty contents from pot into a big bowl and add the rice to the meat mixture.  Mix well.

Make sure the bottom of the instant pot does not have any of the meat mixture stuck to it, or the pot will have a hard time building pressure.  If anything is stuck,  scrape it off before continuing.

Add 1/2 cup water to the bottom of the instant pot.

Place the trivet that came with the Instant Pot on the bottom of the pot.

Put the meat/rice mixture back into the pot on top of the trivet.

Add the rest of the water (1/2 cup) to the mixture in the pot and stir.

Put both bags of the frozen vegetables on top of the mixture.  No need to stir.

Put lid on Instant Pot and make sure the vent is shut to allow pot to build up pressure.

Turn on the pot, and select “Manuel” mode.

Select 12 minutes cooking time.

The pot will start cooking everything and building up pressure. When pressure is reached, it will cook the mixture for 12 minutes automatically.

After cooking is done, let mixture stay in pot (it will switch itself to the warming mode) for 10 minutes.

Release vent to allow any remaining steam to escape.

Stir everything together, separate into batches and freeze what you don’t use right away.
